National Parks in Mizoram

Mizoram has 2 designated national parks.

Murlen National Park

  • Location: Champhai district, Mizoram, Northeast India.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary: Established in 1989.
  • National Park Status: Upgraded to Murlen National Park in 1991.
  • Area: ~200 sq km (77 sq miles).
  • Hills: Mizo Hills.
  • Rivers: Tiau River, Tuivai River, Champhai River (flow near the park).
  • Plants: Tropical and subtropical forests, montane forests, orchids.
  • Animals: Tiger, Leopard, Malayan Giant Squirrel, Himalayan Black Bear, Serow, Hoolock Gibbon, Goral, Sambar.

Phawngpui National Park

  • Location: Lawngtlai district, Mizoram, northeastern India.
  • Other Names: Blue Mountain National Park / Phawngpui Blue Mountain National Park.
  • Name Origin: Named after Phawngpui Peak, the highest peak in Mizoram.
  • Elevation: Phawngpui Peak rises to about 2,157 meters (7,077 feet).
  • National Park Status: Declared a national park in 1992.
  • Area: Approximately 50 sq km (19 sq miles).
  • Hills: Located in the Phawngpui Hills (Blue Mountain Hills), part of the Mizo Hills (Lushai Hills).
  • River: Kolodyne River flows along the eastern side of the park and forms the international border between Mizoram (India) and Myanmar.
  • Flora: Oak, chestnut, bamboo, orchids,.
  • Fauna: Tiger, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Serow, Ghoral, Sambar, Hoolock Gibbon.
