National Parks in Andaman and Nicobar

There are 6 national parks in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Campbell Bay National Park

  • Location: Great Nicobar Island, Andaman and Nicobar Islands (UT), India; eastern Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea; named after the nearby Campbell Bay.
  • National Park: Notified in 1992.
  • Biosphere Reserve: Included in the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve in 2013.
  • Area: ~426 sq.km (164 sq miles).
  • Tribe: Shompen tribe.
  • Plants: Moist broadleaf forests, canopy trees, mangroves, orchids, epiphytes.
  • Animals: Crab-eating macaque, Nicobar tree shrew, Andaman wild pig, Nicobar megapode, saltwater crocodile, hawksbill turtle, olive ridley turtle, leatherback turtle, Malayan box turtle, giant leatherback turtle.

Galathea National Park

  • Location: Nicobar Islands, Andaman and Nicobar Islands (UT), India.
  • Naming: Named after the Danish expedition ship “Galathea,” which visited the area in the 19th century.
  • National Park: Notified in 1992.
  • Biosphere Reserve: Part of the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve (declared in 1989).
  • UNESCO Status: Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve designated by UNESCO in 2013.
  • Area: ~110 sq.km (42 sq miles).
  • Hills: Mount Thullier (Mount Galathea), ~642 m elevation.
  • River: Galathea River, Jubilee River, Amrit Kaur River, Dak Aniang River, Dak Tayal River.
  • Tribe: Shompen community.
  • Plants: Tropical rainforest trees, epiphytes, mangroves, coastal vegetation.
  • Animals: Crab-eating macaque, Nicobar tree shrew, Nicobar megapode, saltwater crocodile, giant leatherback turtle, Malayan box turtle.

Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park

  • Location: South Andaman District, Andaman and Nicobar Islands (UT), India.
  • National Park: Notified in 1983 under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
  • Area: ~281.5 sq.km; includes 15 islands and coral reef systems.
  • Plants: Coral reefs, mangroves, tropical rainforest species, seagrasses.
  • Animals: Andaman wild pig, Dolphins, Water monitor lizard, Saltwater crocodile, Green sea turtle, Leatherback turtle, Hawksbill turtle.

Mount Harriet National Park

  • Location: Ferrargunj Tehsil, South Andaman District, Andaman and Nicobar Islands (UT), India.
  • National Park: Notified in 1979; renamed Mount Manipur National Park in 2021 to honor the memory of freedom fighters of Manipur..
  • Area: ~46.62 sq.km.
  • Hills: Situated on Mount Harriet, third-highest peak of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago.
  • Tribe: Negrito communities.
  • Plants: Evergreen forests, Semi-evergreen forests, Moist deciduous forests, Littoral forests.
  • Animals: Andaman pig, Asian elephant, Andaman wood pigeon, Andaman drongo, saltwater crocodile, green sea turtle, olive ridley turtle, Andaman bull frog, Andaman paddy field frog.

Rani Jhansi Marine National Park

  • Location: South Andaman District, Andaman Islands, India; part of Ritchie’s Archipelago.
  • National Park: Notified in 1996 under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
  • Area: ~256 sq.km (98.8 sq miles).
  • Plants: Mangroves, tropical rainforest species, seagrasses.
  • Animals: Fruit-eating bat, Dugong, Dolphins, Blue whale, Narcondam hornbill, Andaman water monitor, green turtle, hawksbill turtle, leatherback turtle.

Saddle Peak National Park

  • Location: Andaman and Nicobar Islands (UT), India; surrounding the Saddle Peak massif.
  • National Park: Notified as Saddle Peak National Park in 1979.
  • Area: ~85 sq.km.
  • Hills: Saddle Peak, highest elevation in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Plants: Moist tropical forests, evergreen–deciduous vegetation.
  • Animals: Andaman Wild Pig, Andaman Horseshoe Bat, Saltwater Crocodile, Andaman Water Monitor Lizard.

North Button Island National Park

  • Location: Andaman district, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India; Part of a trio of islands including Middle Button Island and South Button Island National Parks.
  • Established: 1979
  • Area: 114 km²
  • Plants: Dense tropical evergreen forests surrounded by shallow coral reefs
  • Marine & Wildlife: Habitat for threatened species such as dugong (sea cow), dolphins, blue whales, water monitor lizards, and various sea turtles

Middle Button Island National Park

  • Location: Andaman district, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India
  • Established: 1979
  • Area: 64 sq.km
  • Plants: Tropical and deciduous forests
  • Marine & Wildlife: Dugongs, Dolphins, Blue Whales, Sea Turtles, Water Monitor Lizards, Spotted Deer
  • Activities: Snorkeling, Scuba Diving, Nature Walks

South Button Island National Park

  • Location: Ritchie’s Archipelago, near South Andaman Island, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India
  • Established: 1987
  • Area: 0.03–5 sq.km; India’s smallest national park
  • Landscape: Predominantly marine ecosystem with shallow-water coral reefs and limited tropical evergreen vegetation
  • Marine & Wildlife: Dugongs, Blue Whales, Dolphins, Sea Turtles, Diverse Reef Fish
  • Activities: Snorkeling, Diving, Marine Life Tours
