Tiger Reserves in Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh has 3 tiger reserves.

Kamlang Tiger Reserve

  • Location: South-eastern part of the Lohit District of Arunachal Pradesh in the Eastern Himalayas.
  • Surrounded by the Kamlang River on the Northern side and Namdapha National Park on the Southern side.
  • Protected Area: Established as a Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary in 1989.
  • Tiger Reserve: Sanctuary was declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 2016.
  • Area: Approximately 783 square kilometers (302 square miles).
  • Elevation: 200 meters (656 feet) to 4,572 meters (15,000 feet) above sea level.
  • River: Named after the Kamlang River, which flows through the reserve.
  • Lake: Glow Lake is located within reserve.
  • Tribe: Mishmi, Digaro Mishmi, and Miju Mishmi reside in the vicinity of the reserve.
  • Plants: Tropical Evergreen Forests, Subtropical Broadleaf Forests, Alpine Vegetation.
  • Animals: Tiger, Clouded Leopard, Marbled Cat, Snow Leopard, Asian Elephant, Golden Cat, Malayan Sun Bear, Slow Loris, Hoolock Gibbon, Takin, White-bellied Heron, Great Hornbill, Assam Roofed Turtle etc.

Namdapha Tiger Reserve

  • Location: Changlang District of Arunachal Pradesh, India.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary: Declared the Namdapha region as a wildlife sanctuary in 1972
  • Tiger Reserve: Sanctuary was upgraded to a tiger reserve 1983.
  • National Park: a significant portion of tiger reserve was declared as Namdapha National Park in 1983.
  • Area: 2052.82 square kilometers (Core: 1807.82 sq km, Buffer: 245 sq km)
  • River: Namdapha River, Noa-Dihing River, Diyun River, Dapha River, Deban River flow through the reserve.
  • Tribe: Tangsa Tribe, Lisu Tribe, Singpho Tribe are associated with the reserve.
  • Plants: Various forest types: Northern Tropical Evergreen Forest or Assam Valley Tropical Wet Evergreen Forest, North Indian Tropical Moist Deciduous Forests, East Himalayan Moist Temperate Forests, Moist Alpine Scrub Forests, Assam Valley Alluvial Plains Semi-evergreen Forests.
  • Animals: Tiger, Jaguar, Snow leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Sun Bear, Hoolock Gibbon, Goral, Namdapha Flying Squirrel, White Winged Wood Duck etc.

Pakke (Pakhui) Tiger Reserve

  • Location: East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern Himalayan foothills.
  • Also known as Pakhui Tiger Reserve.
  • Reserve Forest: the area of Pakke Tiger Reserve was initially established as Pakhui Reserve Forest in 1996.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary: Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1977.
  • Tiger Reserve: the sanctuary was designated as a tiger reserve under the Project Tiger in 1999-2000.
  • Hornbill Nest Adoption Program (HNAP): A community-based Hornbill Nest Adoption Program was introduced in 2011 with support from the Ghora-Aabhe village council and the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department.
  • Award: Pakke Tiger Reserve was honored with the India Biodiversity Award in 2016 under the category of ‘Conservation of threatened species’ for its innovative Hornbill Nest Adoption Programme.
  • Pakke Declaration: Arunachal Pradesh state cabinet adopted the ‘Pakke Declaration in 2021,’ also known as the “Pakke Tiger Reserve 2047 Declaration on Climate Change Resilient and Responsive Arunachal Pradesh.”
  • Area: 1276.95 Sq. Km (Core: 861.95 Sq. Km, Buffer: 515.00 Sq. Km.).
  • River: Bhareli River (Kameng River) (western and northern boundaries of the reserve) and Pakke River (eastern boundary).
  • Oerennial Streams: Nameri Stream, Khari Stream, Upper Dikorai Stream etc.
  • Tribe: Nyishi community.
  • Plants: Assam Valley Tropical Semi-Evergreen Forest, Subtropical Broadleaved Forests, Lowland Moist Forests.
  • Animals: Tigers, Asian Elephants, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Monal,Assam Roofed Turtle etc.
