Tiger Reserves in Telangana

Telangana has 2 designated tiger reserve.

Amrabad Tiger Reserve

  • Location: Nagarkurnool and Nalgonda districts, Telangana, India. Almost 90% lies in Nagarkurnool district.
  • Tiger Reserve: Formed in 2014 after bifurcation of Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve (originally notified as tiger reserve in 1983).
  • Area: 2,611 sq.km.
  • Hills: Nallamala Hills of the Eastern Ghats.
  • River: Krishna River flows through the reserve.
  • Tribe: Chenchu Tribe, Lambadas/Banjara.
  • Plants: Teak, Terminalia species, Pterocarpus species, Lagerstroemia species, Acacia species, Ziziphus species, Prosopis species, various cacti.
  • Animals: Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Sambar.

Kawal Tiger Reserve

  • Location: Adilabad district, Telangana, India.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary: Established in 1965.
  • Protected Area: Declared as a Protected Area under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 in 1999.
  • Tiger Reserve: Officially declared as a tiger reserve in 2012.
  • Area: 1,015 sq.km (Core: 892.23 sq.km; Buffer: 123.12 sq.km).
  • River: Kadam River flows through the reserve.
  • Plants: Teak, Axlewood, arjuna, Indian almond.
  • Animals: Tiger, Leopard, Chinkara, Blackbuck, Sambar.
