Tiger Reserves in Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh is home to 4 tiger reserves.

Achanakmar Tiger Reserve

  • Location: Mungeli district, Chhattisgarh, India.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary: Established in 1975 as Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Biosphere Reserve: Achanakmar–Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve created in 2005, covering Achanakmar and the Amarkantak plateau.
  • Tiger Reserve: Declared in 2009 under Project Tiger.
  • UNESCO Status: Achanakmar–Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve recognized by UNESCO in 2012.
  • Area: 553.286 sq km (213.534 square miles).
  • Hills: Located within the Maikal mountain range.
  • River: Maniyari River flows through the reserve.
  • Plants: Sal, teak, bamboo, mahua, Terminalia species, semal, harra, jamun, amaltas.
  • Animals: Bengal Tiger, Indian Leopard, Gaur, Striped Hyena, Sloth Bear, Dhole.

Guru Ghasidas–Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve

  • Location: Koriya and Surajpur districts, Chhattisgarh, India.
  • Historical Importance: Last known habitat of the Asiatic Cheetah in India.
  • Biosphere Reserve: Part of the Achanakmar–Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve.
  • National Park: Established in 1983 as Sanjay National Park.
  • State Reorganization: Reconstituted in 2000 as Guru Ghasidas National Park after the formation of Chhattisgarh, with about 60% area falling in Koriya district.
  • Renaming: Renamed Guru Ghasidas National Park in 2007 in honor of Guru Ghasidas, founder of the Satnami community.
  • Tiger Reserve: Declared in 2022 by combining Guru Ghasidas National Park and Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary; 53rd Tiger Reserve of India and 4th in Chhattisgarh.
  • Area: 2108 sq km (Guru Ghasidas National Park: 1500 sq km; Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary: 608.51 sq km).
  • River: Banas River, Bijaur Nala, Hasdeo River.
  • Plants: Teak, sal, bamboo.
  • Animals: Tiger, Leopard, Striped Hyena, Gaur, Dhole, Sloth Bear.

Indravati Tiger Reserve

  • Location: Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh, India.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary: Established in 1981 under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
  • Tiger Reserve: Upgraded in 1983 as Indravati Tiger Reserve.
  • Area: 2799.07 sq km (Core/Critical: 1258.37 sq km; Buffer/Peripheral: 1540.70 sq km).
  • River: Indravati River flows through and gives the reserve its name.
  • Plants: Sal, teak, bamboo, mahua, semal, arjun, palas, flame of the forest.
  • Animals: Tiger, Wild Water Buffalo, Leopard, Striped Hyena, Sloth Bear, White-necked Stork, Common Grey Hornbill, Freshwater Crocodile.
  • Wild Water Buffalo: One of the last surviving populations found within the reserve.

Udanti–Sitanadi Tiger Reserve

  • Location: Gariaband district, Chhattisgarh, India.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary: Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary established in 1974.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary: Udanti Wildlife Sanctuary established in 1983.
  • Wildlife Sanctuary Merger: Udanti and Sitanadi wildlife sanctuaries merged in 1998 and renamed Udanti Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Tiger Reserve: Declared during 2008–09 as Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve.
  • Area: 1842.54 sq km (Core/Critical: 851.09 sq km; Core I Udanti: 275.77 sq km; Core II Sitanadi: 575.32 sq km; Buffer: 991.45 sq km).
  • River: Udanti River and Sitanadi River.
  • Plants: Sal, teak, mahua, semal, kusum, harra, tendu.
  • Animals: Tiger, Asiatic Wild Buffalo, Leopard, Dhole, Striped Hyena, Mugger Crocodile.
  • Asiatic Wild Buffalo: Found primarily within the core area of the tiger reserve.
