National Parks in Ladakh

Hemis National Park is the only national park in the Union Territory of Ladakh, India.

  • Location: Eastern Ladakh, Union Territory of Ladakh, India; only national park north of the Himalayas; bounded by Markha River (east) and Indus River (west); surrounded by Zanskar Range and Markha Valley.
  • High Altitude National Park: Also known as Hemis High Altitude National Park.
  • Special Features: Highest global population of snow leopards; only habitat of Shapu (Ladakhi Urial) in India.
  • National Park Established: 1981 (to protect snow leopard and prey species).
  • Area: 4,400 sq.km (1,699 sq miles); Largest national park in India.
  • Elevation: 3,300–6,000 meters.
  • Mountains: Zanskar Range, Ladakh Range, Ganda La (Kanda La), Stok Kangri Peak.
  • Glaciers: Rumbak Glacier, Ganglas La Glacier.
  • Rivers: Indus River, Markha River, Sumdah River, Rumbak River.
  • Valleys: Rumbak Valley, Markha Valley, Sumdah Valley, Indus Valley.
  • Plants: Alpine meadows, dwarf juniper, willow, poplar, alpine cushion plants, wildflowers.
  • Animals: Snow leopard, Shapu (Ladakhi Urial), Argali (Great Tibetan Sheep), Bharal (Blue Sheep), Asiatic ibex, Tibetan wolf, Eurasian brown bear, Himalayan marmot, Himalayan griffon vulture.
  • Cultural Site: Hemis Monastery (Hemis Gompa), a renowned Buddhist monastery located within park.
